Reaching our 2045 net-zero targets requires bold action across our supply chain.

Reaching our 2045 net-zero targets requires bold action across our supply chain. Scope 3 emissions make up 97% of our total footprint, and purchased goods and services alone represent 87% of scope 3. Tackling this category is not just important, it is critical to achieving our climate ambitions.

Working with partners who can provide materials with a reduced product carbon footprint (PCF) is one way in which we pursue our ambitions. Acquiring such products is key to improving our formulations and supporting our customer’s own sustainability goals. Partnerships with chemical companies like BASF and Dow are two prime examples.

Low-carbon alternatives with BASF

BASF has developed a portfolio of aroma ingredients with product carbon footprints that are lower than those of conventional products. The reduction is made possible through the use of alternative feedstocks and an increase in the use of renewable energy instead of traditional fossil energies. By tracking and attributing the share of reduced-emission inputs to specific products, a mechanism called mass-balance, BASF delivers end products with a lower PCF.

The approach is both practical and scalable, enabling us to select ingredients that deliver innovative fragrance compositions with exceptional olfactory performance while also achieving on average around 10% lower PCF. Based on this winning partnership, we are keen to explore further reduction possibilities.

Leveraging low‑carbon ingredient solutions for decarbonisation

With Dow, we teamed up to explore ways to decarbonise our own products through their ingredients. We found one solution in the use of two glycols from Dow’s Decarbia™ portfolio, a collection of products with a reduced carbon footprint, achieved through methods like using renewable energy or bio-based feedstocks.

First using the glycols in the production of flavour and fragrance products in Europe, we have since expanded their use to all regions globally. This has allowed us to accelerate decarbonisation efforts with a 50% reduction of raw material PCF, while delivering lower-GHG-emissions products to our customers around the world.

Together, these two partnerships help us tackle scope 3 emissions and, in particular, advance our efforts in the sustainable procurement of ingredients, an area where we continue to accelerate progress.
